The "Ko" series in this body of work is influenced by the process of creating "karakami" (decorative) paper in the Japanese textile district of Nishijin. The traditional craft of ‘karakami’ involves dyeing paper and then applying patterns with woodblocks. These patterns can be very subtle and it is through this idea of subtle textural differences that I can upon my "Ko" series. Bound together by a common idea but variating in size and location throughout the canvas, these works are meant to be seen together in a series but can also stand alone as individual artworks.
The Modernism series takes a more structured approach to this idea of subtle differences within works. The black thread grounds each work providing a resting point for the softer shapes. The combination of horizontal and vertical lines brings subtle interest to each series. Meant to be paired in varying ways each size and shape are rooted and related to the same idea.
